ADES 3545 – Communication Design Studio: Interaction Design II
Professor Erica Holeman
This app is a theoretical interface that colonists working for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation (of the Alien franchise) would use daily for scheduling, warnings and setting goals. It’s designed to be intentionally difficult to use, as the WYC uses their colonists like disposable indentured servants and keeps regular life extremely difficult.
The Challenge
Create an "Everyday App" or calendar app for the colonists in employment of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation.

The Solution
The WYC cares more about the work than they do the colonists. The app needed to include necessary features like a quota tracker, map and access to scheduled shifts, but it's intention is not to be user friendly. Employees are meant to be used until expiration.

The Process
Starting with low fidelity sketches for the layout, taking reference from UX design in the alien films, I made the interface very "bare bones" from the start. I didn't want the colonists to have interesting visuals inside the app.
Don't read this
My element collages ended up getting merged together to achieve a more sleek look opposed to going full pixel art. I also changed the color to the traditional green recognizable from classic computer interfaces.

Prototyping
Since the visuals are simple, I created some interest with the prototyping. I made it a point to not overdo the motion past the point of what dated technology could achieve. I limited the prototyping to opening boxes, typing text, pressing buttons and selecting listed items to display additional information.
That being said, I fully fleshed out the app. Most every button is clickable and every page is interactive, down to scheduling item pickups and checking planet and/or colony information.
This is filler text to left align my paragraphs. God I hope you cant read these.
The Result
The Weyland-Yutani Corporation Everyday App is a perfect platform for the loyal citizens of colonies throughout the galaxy to organize their company assigned tasks. It allows citizens to easily manage their schedule, view the progress of their work quota, get updates on weather, and book transports to the colony of their choosing. All while maintaining focus on what's important, the work.
Please stop.
